This past weekend, four of our Youth Grizzlies — Ayden, Naim, Micah, and Bryson — traveled to the historic War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, Indiana to compete at the USA Wrestling Youth Folkstyle Nationals. On paper, it was a wrestling trip. In reality, it was something far bigger.

The nine of us — four young wrestlers, three fathers, a grandfather, and me — piled into a 12-passenger van and headed west straight into one of the biggest snowstorms the Northeast has seen in years. What should have been a long ride home turned into an 18-hour journey after the tournament, battling weather, fatigue, and the unexpected. But not once did the spirit of the trip waver. If anything, it strengthened it.

On the mats, the boys competed with courage and heart against the best in the country. Bryson wrestled outstanding, earning 5th place in the 8U 62-lb division and becoming our lone All-American. Naim (10U, 59 lbs) went 1–2, while Ayden (12U, 63 lbs) and Micah (14U, 92 lbs) both went 0–2. But anyone who understands wrestling — or life — knows the scoreboard never tells the full story.

What mattered most was watching four young boys step onto a national stage, compete fearlessly, and walk away knowing they belong at that level. The confidence gained, the grit built, and the lessons learned will last far longer than any medal.

Just as powerful was what happened off the mat. Seeing three fathers and a grandfather pour unconditional love and support into their sons — win or lose — was something truly special. Again and again, the boys were reminded that they are valued not for results, but for effort, character, and heart. The message was clear: the process matters more than the outcome, and they are deeply loved no matter what.

I’m incredibly grateful to have shared this journey with Coach Dave Alvarado (and proud grandfather), Coach Micah Naylor, and fathers Vince and Jalal. The friendships being built between these families — and the trust they place in our program — mean more to me than I can put into words.

This weekend was a reminder of why we do what we do. Wrestling is the vehicle, but the destination is much bigger: confidence, resilience, connection, and lifelong memories. Wins are great — and we’ll celebrate them — but it’s these moments, these bonds, and these lessons that truly define success.

Back to the grind.

And we’ll be back next year — stronger, closer, and with even more Grizzlies.
